Boring but important

Tue 25 Jun 19: as a part of the scheme to re-engineer the crossroads by Histon Green we’re getting a new crossing route and this needs poles to carry the units for people to control the lights. Note how the one above is a couple of feet in from the kerb and in the middle of the old footway. It had to be sited there because there are cables underground close to the kerb. Fortunately there was space behind to widen the footway, note the extent of the tactile paving.

jcUnfortunately the new pole was positioned before the widening immediately behind it (the black tarmac area in the photo above) had been done (see the photo on the left) which resulted in some leaping to conclusions that there would be inadequate width in the pavement for access by people with pushchairs or driving mobility scooters. As is now evident that is not the case.

What does this tell us?

1 it’s difficult enough implementing improvements without the uncertainty of needing to cope with unexpected underground cables and piping;

2 it’s always worth waiting for a job to be completed before commenting on it; and

3 well done for the the people involved building in the extra width anyway and then making the right decisions when the job was being done.
