Mon 29 Jul 19: I’m not really sure if this is good news or just good enough. Our blue bin waste goes to the Amey site at Waterbeach where I’m told there’s enough separation of what’s a very mixed recyclate stream in the bin to enable bales of HDPE (both the bottles and the tops) to be baled up and sent to ‘plastic recyclers in Loughborough and Kent to get made into a raw product for manufacturing’.
The good news is that it doesn’t get shipped off to landfill in Malaysia and that it remains HDPE with its intrinsic value ie it doesn’t get downgraded to a generic thermoplastic.
The bad news for me is that such recyclate streams get mixed in the first place and there’s surely sufficient volume for their to be a dedicated user to recycler stream.
